BRUSSELS, Dec. 9 (Chinese media) -- Almost two thirds of enterprises in the European Union (EU) had a website as of January 2008, and 93 percent of enterprises with 10 or more employees had access to the Internet, said Eurostate, the statistical service of the EU, on Tuesday.
There was a slight increase in the percentage of enterprises with websites compared with a year ago. The Internet access rate remained the same.
In January 2008, the highest proportions of enterprises with Internet access in the EU were recorded in the Netherlands and Finland (both 99 percent), Denmark (98 percent) and Belgium, Austria and Slovenia (97 percent each).
The percentage was less than 90 percent in only five member states: Romania (67 percent), Bulgaria (83 percent), Hungary (86 percent), Latvia (88 percent) and Cyprus (89 percent).
In January 2008, 81 percent of EU enterprises had a broadband connection. The proportion of enterprises with a broadband connection in January 2008 was above 90 percent in Spain, France, Finland and Belgium. Less than 60 percent of enterprises have a broadband connection in Romania, Lithuania and Poland.
The data show that while Internet access appears to be approaching saturation in nearly all member states, the level of broadband Internet access is still increasing.
