SALVADOR, Brazil, Dec. 14 (Chinese media) -- Latin American ministers will discuss social protection measures in the face of the world financial crisis at a summit of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), the Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.
The Mercosur summit includes four high-level meetings from Dec.15 to Dec. 17 in Costa de Sauipe, some 110km north of Salvador, capital of the sate of Bahia, Brazil. During the meeting, the ministers will discuss the basis of a regional social action plan,said the statement.
For the first time ministers of social development and foreign affairs from the Mercosur's associate members (Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia) will participate in the Common Market Board meeting, formed by the foreign ministers of the member countries -- Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay as well as Venezuela.
The summit is expected to announce the launching of the Mercosur Social Institute, which will give technical support to the formulation and evaluation of social policies developed in theregion.
According to the agenda, initiatives on the economic and commercial fronts, including the creation of the Mercosur Fund of guaranties for micro, small and medium-sized companies and the Mercosur Fund of familiar agriculture will be discussed on Monday morning.
A preferential commercial agreement between the Mercosur and the Southern Africa Customs Union (SACU) is also expected to be signed.
The presidents of Guyana, Suriname, Cuba, Mexico and Panama have also been invited to the summit.
