Tokyo stocks close higher on U.S. auto bailout plan

TOKYO, Dec. 22 (Chinese media) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday on the U.S. government's announcement of emergency loans to bail out major automakers.



The Nikkei 225 Average advance 135.26 points, or 1.57 percent, to 8,723.78.

The broader Topix index increased 14.29 points, or 1.71 percent, to 848.72.

On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining issues 1,140 to 469, with 99 others remaining unchanged.

Trading volume on the main section shrank to 1,590.19 million shares 1,914.74 million from Friday.

The TSE's Second Section index edged down 3.07 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,914.40 on a volume of 50.18 million shares.

On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term March Nikkei 225 index futures contract gained 140 points to 8,740.
