Singapore carrier's container shipment drops nearly quarter in late 2008

SINGAPORE, Jan. 28 (Chinese media) -- Singapore's transportation company Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) said its container shipping volumes fell 24 percent on year during Nov. 15 to Dec. 26 in 2008,local media reported on Wednesday.

According to radio station 938Live's report, the container carrier moved 218,000 forty-foot equivalent units (FEUs) in the six week period compared with 288,600 a year earlier. NOL said the decline is due to the rapid deterioration in demand on all major trade lanes and measures that it took to manage costs.

The company said the average revenue per container during the period was around 3 percent higher to 2,921 U.S. dollars, and overall volumes rose 5 percent in 2008 to around 2.46 million FEUs.

NOL is a Singapore-listed transportation firm, with core businesses involved in container transportation, terminal operation and supply chain management.
