EAC to turn Lake Victoria into big economic zone

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 8 (Chinese media) -- The East African Community (EAC) has announced its plan to transform Lake Victoria into a special economic development zone which is expected to boost growth in the riverine countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Local English newspaper The Citicen on Friday quoted EAC Secretary-General Juma Mwapachu as saying that the master plan would involve the expedited implementation of regional projects and programs to boost transport, tourism, fisheries and agriculture.

The 5-billion-U.S.-dollar plan first features a ring road around the lake, the world's second largest freshwater body. The ring road is expected to facilitate transport and tourism in and around the lake zone.

The EAC chief said that the feasibility study for the implementation of the master plan would soon start and would be conducted on a priority basis.

Both local and international investors are expected to take part in the development of the lake region which has been planned to accelerate EAC growths into a middle-income economy.

The East African Community now consists of five member states which also include Burundi and Rwanda that do not directly border the lake.
