Swaziland king calls for economic diversification

LUSAKA, Aug. 2 (Chinese media) -- King Mswati III of Swaziland has said that the southern African region cannot realize growth without diversifying its economies, Zambia Daily Mail reported Saturday.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Swaziland Prime Minister Absalom Dlamini during the official opening of the Agriculture and Commercial Show of Zambia in Lusaka on Friday.

"The reason why I am emphasizing on trade, growth and diversification is because these issues are intertwined. Trade promotes diversification while diversification is a catalyst for trade," the king was quoted as saying.

King Mswati said it was imperative that as global trade evolved, every country should be on the alert so that they become part of the global movement.

He said the region needed to promote trade within itself.

"I am aware that many times we have looked for trade opportunities beyond our continent, yet if we work as a region, we can boost our economies as we tap on experiences, resources and capacities of each of our countries as well as comparative advantage," King Mswati said.

King Mswati said this year's theme of the show "Growth in Diversity" came at a time when the whole world was engaged in numerous activities that included the non-ending trade negotiations.

He said through these negotiations, all countries in the world were working tirelessly to ensure that their economies achieved diversified growth.

"The countries that are strong in the production of agricultural goods want to diversify into production of industrial goods and those trading in goods would like to diversify into trade and services," King Mswati said.
