Throughput of Dubai Ports World up 21% in first half of 2008

ABU DHABI, July 22 (Chinese media) -- Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) recorded a container throughput of 13.6 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent container units) in the first half of 2008, up 21 percent over the same period of last year, local Gulf News reported Tuesday.

The state-run company recorded a strong increase of 26 percent in container throughput in the region of Middle East, Europe and Africa in the first six months of 2008, according to the report.

The Dubai-based marine terminal operator's container throughput grew by 15 percent in the region of Asia Pacific and Indian Subcontinent in the first half of this year, while the region of America and Australia saw an increase of 12 percent in the same period.

The increase was driven by the faster growing emerging markets along the Asia-Europe trade routes and added capacity in some markets, Dubai Ports World's CEO Mohammad Sharaf said.

"Our consolidated terminals have made a very pleasing start to the year with 21 percent volume growth," he added.

Dubai Ports World, affiliated with the Dubai government of the UAE, currently owns 45 terminals and 13 new developments in 29 countries.

Its capacity stands at 54 million TEUs now and is expected to increase to around 90 million TEUs by 2017 when new terminals are ready.
