London stock market opens slightly higher for New Year trading

LONDON, Jan. 2 (Chinese media) -- Britain's leading share index opened slightly higher on the first day of trading in the New Year.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index was up 17.50 points, at 4451.67 by 9:00, with low trading volumes expected following the New Year holiday.

Mining shares were among the risers, with Vedanta Resources up 5.72 percent and Kazakhmys adding 3.3 percent.
