Tanzanian government funds to bail out national flag carrier

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 3 (Chinese media) -- The government of Tanzania has fished from the central coffer 2.5 billion shillings (2 million U.S. dollars) to inject into the crisis-ridden national flag carrier airline.

Tanzanian Infrastructure Minister Shukuru Kawambwa on Friday assured the public that the government would gradually inject more funds into the Air Tanzania Corporation Limited.

Mustapha Nyang'anyi, board chairman of the state-run airline company, has earlier indicated that his company needed 92 billion shillings (73.6 million dollars) to revamp its operations.

The government of Tanzania has entrusted two separate committees to probe into the Air Tanzania Corporation Limited for its financial and technical crisis.

Both investigation teams have been given options of coming up with independent opinions of and options for the future of the airline which in late December just got back its operating certificate after having been suspended first by the International Air Transport Association and then by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority.

The International Air Transport Association has suspended the membership of the Tanzanian national flag carrier due to the backlog of technical problems which the association had pointed out but the Tanzanian state-run airline had failed to redress in good time.

The Air Tanzania Corporation Limited has been faring in financial problems since late 2005 when it was parted with joint-venture cooperation by the South African airline.
