U.S. economy contracts 0.5% in third quarter

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (Chinese media) -- The U.S. economy shrank at an annual rate

of 0.5 percent in the third quarter of this year, the worst showing since the

third quarter of 2001, according to the final estimate released Tuesday by the

Commerce Department.
