Russia's official unemployment hits 2.34 mln

MOSCOW, March 11 (Chinese media) -- Russia's official unemployment figure has reached 2.34 million workers amid falling energy prices and the global economic downturn, a senior official said Wednesday.

"These (unemployment) are the people who have been officially registered with employment agencies and will be granted unemployed status and receive unemployment allowances in the future," Federal Employment Service head Yury Gertsiy said.

Unemployment was still increasing in the oil and gas-rich country, one of the world's major energy suppliers, because of falling prices.

"At present, we register an increase in applications from those who went jobless as against the beginning of this year and the end of last year," Gertsiy said. "We've received 5,000 applications."

Russia's gross domestic product decreased 2.4 percent in January and the downward trend was expected to continue.

Russian economic officials have predicted that the country's economy would sink 2.2 percent this year.
